Homicide in the Holler: A Cozy Mothman Mystery

Not everything is as it seems in Montcreek, West Virginia…

Em McKinley thought she’d escaped Appalachian life and sink into an exciting queer life in the big city. Now she’s inherited her grandfather’s house in her hometown holler of Montcreek. With her big city dreams detoured, she works the gift shop of her step-uncle’s Mothman tourist trap and waits for boredom to set in. After all, cryptids are just fun stories, right? At least, fun until a local Mothman sighting changes everything.

Now Em’s step-uncle is dead, the killer is on the loose, and she’s the key suspect. It’ll take everything Em and her new true believer friend Morgan can think of to solve the mystery and clear her name.

Homicide in the Holler is a cozy mystery novella featuring queer love in an Appalachian small town. Also cryptids, because Appalachia is as eerie as it is beautiful. Written by Gavin Gaddis (Standard Docking Procedure) in collaboration with Caroline Mincks (Seen and Not Heard), the minds behind this mystery are gay, trans, and hail from either side of Appalachia (Kentucky and Virginia, respectively.

While the novella is still being written, you can read the prologue and first chapter now! I’ve povided it in the form of a Drive folder with a pdf, epub, and doc version for your preferred viewing experience. All three are the same!

If you wouldn’t mind taking one extra step, you can also get the same link by signing up for the GKG Fiction newsletter.

I will only email you when there’s major updates about my current writing projects, and I promise I will hand-sketch a bespoke image of Mothman every time I draft a new one. Bare minimum, you’ll get Moth-art.

Thanks for your time!
